Differences in lighting between display cabinets in art galleries and cultural relics museums

Except for the occasional small number of three-dimensional exhibits, most of the museum space is for exhibition paintings. In this space, apart from the walls and paintings, it is also the lighting. With so few spatial elements, lighting is particularly important to enrich the display! It is no exaggeration to say that the importance of space lighting in art gallery showcases will be higher than that of museum showcases. In this case, where should the importance of art museum space be reflected?

The first is color rendering. In application cases, the color rendering requirements of art gallery lighting are relatively high. Although there is no explicit regulation, they will be higher than those of museums. When selecting lighting products for the museum showcase space, the color rendering index (Ra) will generally be greater than 90. For oil paintings, the light source expressiveness of different pigments will also be considered. In addition to the general color rendering index, special color rendering index may also be required.

Second is color temperature. Museum display cabinets, especially historical museums, mainly use warm colors, and generally use 3000K. Art museum display cabinets are different. In addition to warm colors for calligraphy and Chinese paintings, neutral colors or even cool colors are often used for oil paintings! Some art museum display cabinets often introduce natural light, combined with high color temperature artificial light, to create a natural and fresh light environment.

There are also differences between museum display cabinets and art gallery display cabinets in terms of light radiation and natural light treatment. The museum showcase space displays cultural relics, emphasizing the protection of exhibits and displaying them on the basis of protection. Art museum display cabinets display works of art, with an emphasis on display, and protection should be considered on the basis of display. There are no explicit regulations on infrared and ultraviolet radiation in art museum display cabinets! In actual projects, the control of infrared and ultraviolet radiation is generally not emphasized. Especially now that LED lighting products are widely used, because they do not contain infrared or ultraviolet radiation, no one pays attention to this issue!

The main color of the museum display cabinet is dark, and the highlights are dark and bright. Due to the long history of the cultural relics, they themselves will not be outstanding, and may not be as beautiful as the display racks and stands on which they are stored. Therefore, when we perform lighting treatment, we should focus the light on the exhibits to highlight the exhibits. And if the main color is dark, it can absorb light, so that people's visual focus will naturally turn to the exhibits. The exhibition cabinet space of an art museum is different. The artwork itself is more dazzling. We only need to fully express its texture details through lighting, so its spatial environment is mostly dominated by bright colors.
